Since I spend most of my day in front of the computer, I constantly try to find new places or websites for inspiration. One great place online for design is smashingmagazine.com. They have interesting articles about web design, design trends, and art in general. Online tools are great, but don’t forget to go out and look for inspiration as well. Everyone loves Amazon, but I still enjoy going to the bookstore and buying a book. I will pay the few extra dollars for the instant gratification. What is your virtual and real work inspiration?

You realize you are getting old when you start looking at younger people and saying I never did that. While the internet has introduced so many good things, it can be a killer of productivity at work. People checking email, IMing, blogging, Facebooking, and reading news are constantly sidetracked by what I call the happy lights of the web. Are people really overworked or are we producing a generation of people who cannot manage their own tasks? I fear it is the second one, and it can be seen in teenagers multitask at dinner with a fork in one hand and a phone in the other. While taking classes at a local university I was amazed by the behavior of the students. They would sit in class, open their laptops and do everything but pay attention to what the teacher was doing. Then during a lab they would have nothing but questions about what was going on!. Why is this accepted behavior. Kids need to be put on notice, “you are entitled nothing”, but the blame doesn’t fall strictly on them. Parents start justifying these behaviors at the elementary school level and seem to listen and believe a child over an adult. It is unbelievable! When I was in school, my parents didn’t blame the teacher, they blamed me, and rightly so. To all the overbearing parents, it is time to shut it, keep your suggestions to yourself, and go do your job. You wouldn’t appreciate it if I came into your office telling you how to do things. No wonder The Kids Aren’t Alright.
